EarthWalk FlexCart™ mobile labs provide Barbados schools with turnkey solution. In 2008, the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports acquired 56 FlexCart mobile labs as part of the first phase of its Education Sector Enhancement Program. This provided schools with a turn-key technology solution that allows for communication and resource sharing across a LAN at each of the schools as well as Internet connectivity and communications across the Ministry’s WAN. EarthWalk also contributed to the second phase of the program, in which an additional 96 FlexCart mobile labs were deployed across the island.

Egypt Deploys SmartCart™ Mobile Labs at Egyptian Army Training Facility
As part of a pilot project with the Egyptian Ministry of Production, based in Madinat El Salam, EarthWalk deployed several of its SmartCart32 Mobile Labs at a local Egyptian Army training facility. The facility is responsible for preparing military personnel for workforce training in Egyptian military factories.
The SmartCart32 labs are being used to support training initiatives in new product development. EarthWalk’s wireless technology enables video streaming instruction the base is using to replace outdated books and technology manuals—speeding up and enhancing the production process. Because the EarthWalk mobile labs can be integrated with existing network and/or Internet access, VSAT and satellite communications, the Egyptian Army is currently testing the operability of the systems which could lead to future initiatives with the Egyptian military.
Additionally, EarthWalk’s mobile labs were showcased at Egypt’s FutureTech Schools to continue to promote Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) in both urban and rural areas for accessing Web-based education and training.
EarthWalk Partners with Academy for Educational Development and Intel Corporation for the Computers-on-Wheels (CoW) Pilot
EarthWalk partnered with the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and the Intel Corporation [under the ERfKE Support Project (ESP) for the Computers-on-Wheels (COW) Pilot,] to help transform the way Jordanian students develop essential 21st century skills. The approaches to this pilot include: Providing students and teachers access to information and communications technology (ICT) resources, and delivering effective professional development to teachers, which enables successful integration of ICT into teaching and learning.
This project used EarthWalk’s SmartCart™ mobile labs and rugged eBuddy™ wireless laptops. The labs are wheeled into classrooms so a teacher and teams of students can work, without having to move to a fixed computer lab. Moving the computers to the students rather than moving students to labs increases the amount of productive time spent with computers.
The EarthWalk equipment was implemented into classrooms at four different schools—two for boys and two for girls. Teachers at the schools have been trained in project-based learning, using the EarthWalk mobile lab technology for accessing the Internet…and for collaborative projects, research, and e-learning.

EarthWalk selected to provide Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment and computer hardware for education pilot program
EarthWalk was selected by the Academy of Education Development (AED) [the organization managing the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Primary Education Project (PEP)] to provide information and communication technology (ICT) equipment and computer hardware for the Education Pilot Program. The Primary Education Project is a five-year mission, involving all public primary schools in Macedonia.
The key goal of the project is to introduce a range of ICT hardware, software, and Internet to students and teachers, in hopes of improving the integration of ICT’s into the curriculum.
The Macedonian Government procured approximately 98,000 computers used in the 2008-2009 school year and is planning additional procurement for 2009-2010. The ratio of computers to students will decrease from 1:70 to 1:15.
AED has chosen EarthWalk’s eXpress8x8™ cases, rugged eBuddy™ laptops, long-life SideKick batteries, SafeCase™ locker and FlexCart™ mobile labs to be used in the project. EarthWalk’s innovative equipment is of key interest because of its applicability in remote and rural regions. Many schools in Macedonia are rural satellite schools, which do not have ideal conditions for traditional desktop labs. The equipment has been placed in eleven of these schools.
In preliminary visits, teachers and students expressed excitement over the laptops. The SideKick batteries have also received positive feedback, with one teacher stating he received thirty hours of use from one charging cycle. The Intel-powered mini-notebook, the Classmate PC, is also being tested in the PEP pilot program.
Realizing the need for an economical, turn-key solution for the wave of low-cost, mini-notebooks, EarthWalk designed a version of its low-cost FlexCart™ line to be paired with the Classmate PCs. TheFlexCart™ (as with all EarthWalk mobile labs) is fully compatible with the Classmate PC and ninety percent of notebooks on the market. Although the price of mini-notebooks such as the Classmate PC has greatly improved, the issues of limited battery capacity, transportation, and security are still major concerns.
EarthWalk provides an all-in-one solution with our cost-conscious approach to mobile computing and extended-life battery options. Not only do EarthWalk mobile labs provide security and a significant savings compared to traditional desktop labs, but they’re also 85% more electrically efficient.
Mexican Students Use EarthWalk SmartCart Mobile Lab Solution to Learn IT Skills
For many children in poor communities across Latin America, the transition from secondary school to work exposes the great mismatch between the skills they have, and those which employers are seeking. For the children of Santa Catarina Polytechnic Preparatory in the outskirts of Monterrey, joining the workforce will be business as usual.
In collaboration with the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP-Mexico), EarthWalk has made access to information and communication technologies a reality by donating more than 400 eBuddy™ laptops and 28 computer labs to provide computer training on word processing, presentation, and database applications. Lacking in infrastructure, Polytechnic benefited instantly from the mobility, safety, and virtually continuous operation that EarthWalk labs can offer. By resolving space deficiencies in the fixed lab (and turning six other classrooms into labs,) the student-to-computer ratio substantially decreased.
Our labs now provide the schools with adequate security, by properly storing and locking the laptops when not in use. They also eliminate the hassles of electrical disruptions, by supplying each laptop with three days of uninterrupted power, thanks to the “all day” SideKick batteries.
Since the introduction of two SmartCart32™ mobile labs at Polytechnic, more than 210 students have strengthened their IT skills with nearly 11,000 hours of instruction and practice, in just one semester. Given the success of the pilot in improving education for the children of this poor community, NCCEP-Mexico has deployed another eight SmartCart32™ mobile wireless computer labs to the states of Chihuahua and Veracruz—and an additional eight eXpress 8×8™ labs to the more rural areas of Veracruz.
Programa para o Futuro (PPF) aims to provide a safe, supportive environment where employability, technical and life skills, and supplemental basic education are provided. PPF provides information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as EarthWalk’s mobile computer labs in a project-based learning approach as a means to accelerate learning, build self-confidence, learn to develop individual career plans, prepare high-quality CVs, practice interviewing/presentation skills, and enhance the employability of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in an economy witnessing strong growth in the ICT sector.
In addition to these skills, youth also gain important life and social skills. They learn how to develop personal budgets and use saving mechanisms, improve their literacy skills and are given the opportunity to develop their individual voice and sense of agency. Critical to all this is a focus on learning about HIV/AIDS, how to avoid contracting this disease and how to live a positive life with the disease.
Ultimately, the goal of this project is to create mid-term and long-term impacts where youth develop more positive attitudes towards reproductive health and gender issues, achieve personal and professional stability and satisfaction, become more engaged with their families and friends, and view themselves as agents of change within their communities and create and sustain professional careers.
EW providing ICT equipment and computer hardware for sub-Saharan Africa schools through NEPAD partnership
The NEPAD e-Schools Initiative is a flagship undertaking aimed at ensuring that African youth graduate with skills enabling them to actively participate in the global information society and knowledge economy. EarthWalk, as a member of the CISCO consortium, has been actively involved in the deployment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment and computer hardware in Africa, via the NEPAD e-School Demonstration Project.
EarthWalk also joined forces with CompuTrainer—another NEPAD consortium member and South African-based company. CompuTrainer works with companies, governments, and donor organizations in Africa that wish to raise local awareness about HIV, AIDS, and TB, and help to provide e-Health content where no infrastructure or electricity is available. Access to that information is provided via EarthWalk’s systems, which can deliver the e-Health content anywhere.
Through this initiative, EarthWalk also introduced its line of eBuddy™ semi-rugged laptops, paired with the eCharger™ Caddy, and the SideKick PowerPack batteries, to schools in Sub-Saharan Africa.
EW Technologies help overcome geographic separation in Palestine’s education system
The Palestine Education Initiative is building on, benefiting from, and following the example of the successful Jordan Education Initiative. EarthWalk is working with ASAL Technologies, a local Palestinian company, to introduce innovative wireless mobile technologies to accelerate the integration of Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Palestinian education system.
During the Expotech Information Technology Conference, ASAL introduced EarthWalk’s technology to Prime Minister Ahmand Qurei, Dr. Sabri Saidam, Minister of Telecom, and the Dr. Salam Fayad, Minister of Finance. EarthWalk’s technology brings geographically distant schools closer together and facilitates learning, creativity, and innovation. This pilot initiative employs EarthWalk’s SmartCart™ mobile labs, which provide the platform for a stimulating and effective learning environment.
Included with the rugged eBuddy semi-rugged laptops is a range of software that converts spoken words into written text, helping students with manual dexterity difficulties to produce written work. Students with visual impairments use software that reads text, on a screen or in a book, and recites it through headphones.
Because of EarthWalk’s unique solution with recharging battery bays, students can use the laptops continually throughout the school day, with no down time for recharging batteries. Equipment purchased from EarthWalk includes 64 eBuddy semi-rugged laptops and three SmartCart32™ mobile labs, complete with BatteryBay™ charging drawers.
This EarthWalk mobile learning environment allows computer lending managers to replace and charge batteries, and to restore settings, before the laptops are loaned again. Students can now borrow laptops, and use them anywhere on campus. They can check e-mail and surf the internet using the University of Baths wireless network, or log into the central computer system through one of many available data access points. Students can also store personal settings, such as voice recognition patterns, on USB memory drives—meaning they can transfer personal settings between laptops every time they borrow them.
EW SmartCart™ mobile labs deployed throughout Puerto Rican Commonwealth
Since 2001, the Puerto Rico Department of Education has requested hundreds of SmartCart™ mobile labs for schools throughout the Commonwealth. As part of the “Technology Initiative Centers (CENIT)” program, EarthWalk and its in-country partner provide installation and support for schools selected to participate. To date more than 1,200 institutions have been equipped on the island.
As of April 2008, EarthWalk became the sole source supplier for the Department of Education, and continues to deploy hundreds of mobile labs to the remaining schools.
EW helps students in rural Senegal receive computer training through innovative technology
Selected as a resource partner by the Academy for Education Development (AED), EarthWalk provided several hundred eBuddy™ semi-rugged laptops, eCharger™ Caddy with long-life SideKick PowerPack batteries, and EcoSolar2™ power systems as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Educational Quality Improvement Program 2 (EQUIP2) project.
EQUIP2 helps middle school students get computer training, in rural areas of Senegal. The project targets schools in the regions of Fatick, Kolda, and Tambacounda, which are marked by high levels of poverty and low rates of girls’ enrollment. To date, over 5,000 middle school students have been reached by using the mobile lab approach, taking the eBuddy™ semi-rugged laptops and SideKick PowerPack batteries to schools with no or unsure electricity.
EarthWalk equipment has also made possible summer camps for rural schools with over 100 students, in which software training was combined with community work.
International School of Port of Spain discovers innovative uses for EW FlexCart16 and eXpress 8×8 mobile labs
At the International School of Port of Spain, nearly 500 children use and share FlexCart16™ and eXpress8x8™ mobile labs, to learn various subjects including: science, French and Spanish, presentation, publication, and word-processing. Classroom sizes vary between 15 and 18 students, which has allowed the school to achieve a remarkable ratio of one laptop per child. Also, the school has introduced an innovative “laptop check-out” system for its library where students are free to borrow a computer when they present their student identification.
EW makes a difference by providing Ugandan students with access to computers.
In order to provide a quality, educational, and fun learning experience to students of the Awegys Secondary School in Kigo, Uganda, EarthWalk Communications, Inc. assisted the Mtaala Foundation by donating sixteen eBuddy™ 81 laptops, SideKick™ PowerPack batteries, along with a PowerStation™ charging system, EarthWalk is proud to provide these students access to green, environmentally-conscious computer systems. These products will aid in enhancing the learning experience for these students, as well as providing them with an exciting, newfound experience of operating a computer for the first time in their lives. Students will use these products as a medium for word processing and to enhance their overall computer skills.
With the mindset of helping students learn more efficiently and effectively while going Green, EarthWalk is actively involved in providing the needy with the opportunity to experience a higher quality of learning. In the past, EarthWalk has donated their mobile computer systems to other locations in Africa, such as Senegal.
The Mtaala Foundation is based in New Jersey, the United Kingdom, and Uganda, and was created to help establish quality learning experiences for underprivileged children in Uganda. They work with the school system in order to supply them with required resources such as literature, food and water, health care, and improved conditions. EarthWalk is proud to have helped improve access to technology to students at the Awegys Secondary School in Kigo, Uganda.
EW labs benefitting students at the University of Bath
EarthWalk’s labs are benefiting students with disabilities and learning difficulties, providing them with equal access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
In the United Kingdom, the University of Bath launched an Assistive Technologies Initiative pilot program for nearly 400 enrolled students with disabilities or learning difficulties, including dyslexia. This pilot initiative employs EarthWalk’s SmartCart™ mobile labs, which provide a platform for a stimulating and effective learning environment for the students.
